Sneak Peek in on the New Design of Userstyles

Hi All,

After running user testing with our beta group, and receiving overall positive feedback, we’re moving forward with the new design for the Stylish website. I’d like to give a big thanks to members of our beta group that volunteered their time and gave us extensive and very helpful feedback!

Since it’s a big project, the design will be broken down to 2 stages. I’d like to share with you all screenshots from stage 1 (I’ll share notes about stage 2 when we’re closer to implementing it).

You’re welcome to give us feedback. As always, we’ll reply only to concrete feedback written in an appropriate language.

Stage 1 includes:
  • New design for the home page, results pages (popular styles, website styles, etc.), and style pages.
  • No features, terminology or functionality changes will be included at this stage (we’ll update about these when we’re closer to stage 2).
Our main goals for the new design is to:
  • Improve style discovery
  • Improve overall user experience
  • Bring Userstyles to 2017 in terms of design and UI
Notes:
  • The shared screenshots include dummy content.
  • We plan to release stage 1 at the end of the month or the beginning of April.

    Grid view sucks.
Make list view, that way the description of the style will be shown.
    That is all.
  • The screenshots looks awesome!

Thank you for bringing userstyles.org into 2017!

    1. I'm missing License info.
    2. I don't see search options.
    3. What's that 'Archive this Style' button?, archive where?

Agree, option about it would be nice, but if not might be styled, for me what's important is the page provide useful info on search results or style page even if it's hidden, for example, style category, author/style ID, MD5 checksum...
  • Looks great and modern. Will forum also be changed?
  • Looking really awesome for me. maybe some old users hate or miss old design after the update, but this design would be much helpful to bring new users and would be good to make this community bigger I hope

I'm afraid about is this server enough to handle the new theme though. even current web design seem really light, I sometimes heaving trouble when access or upload something on here. if the new design is heavier than now then the trouble would be happen more often.

    It seems a good job
    ;-)
Personally, I prefer a compact style with the maximum of information without the need to scroll all the time and possibility of functionality / customization than a beautiful site with too much large empty place .
    Less is better for me.
It can be smart too of course...
Actually, I use the userscript "Table View Plus", which present the results in a table very useful for quick view and control.
It can sort userstyles by name / number of installs (by week / month), date of Update, date of creation etc...
Their screenshots can be viewed by hover on small icons.

It is compact with a max of styles in one page (200).

Have you plan something like this (maybe by options) ?
And add a favorites / sets functions to it ?

  • looks alright like neseri said add a List view do how youtube does it and add 2 icons to switch between Grid and List

    Looks great!

Can you also add "Collections", so users can make a list of their styles?

    agreed
Looking at screenshot, sometimes it's hard to decide whether the style worths to be itstalled. So, the text description of style is required, IMO. Maybe it can be shown on mouseover event?

Plus, we'd like to see more info in style description:
style category , daily/week/total install counters

    - Licence info is under the 'Information' section on the style page.

    - Not sure which search option you're referring to, but the search box is in the top navigation bar and the search results page will look like the 'Results page' I've attach.

    - Archive is instead of 'Delete' since in Stylish you don't really delete a style, you just take it out of the search results and you can always retrieve it as the owner, so we thought the word 'Archive' is more accurate.

    - I understand that some of you prefer a list view. I like CodyMKW's suggestion of a button that allows choosing between grid and list view. I'll add it to our pipeline and we'll work on it in stage 2.

    - For now we're not adding new features, but I'll add to the pipeline your suggestion for extra information points in the search results.

That's a great idea! We're planning to add 'Bookmarks' in stage 2. Maybe in stage 3 people will be able to share their favorite lists.

We actually didn't think the description is substantial, especially since many styles don't bother too much with it. However, since several of you raised it, what we can consider is adding the description to the 'list' mode when will add the option to choose between grid and list.

Love your idea! Adding it to the pipeline of stage 2.

For now we're not touching the forum. In terms of priorities, we want to bring the website up to a certain point, and then re-examine the extension's design based on feedback we received from users.

We're definitely expecting that some users will find the change hard to get used to, like with any change. We're trying to minimize this as much as we can by sharing information in advance and receiving feedback that will help us improve, if not in stage 1, at least in stage 2 of the launch.

We're not familiar with performance issues with the site right now. However, we're in the process of improving the infrastructure in any case, to support the new design. I hope it will solve the issue you're experiencing.
  • I'm really lovin' the look of this! Any thoughts on a dark mode? Or just gonna leave that to the community?

This new layout looks really neat! I also love the new features and options. Thanks for keeping this wonder of a gem updated!

That is a real shame Natalie, because this forum is absolutely BROKEN! Here's just one screenshot of what I deal with on a daily basis......just look at my current number of active "my discussions" correctly lists 22.....cannot get to them at ALL!! Click on that heading or the actual correct number shown of 22....and NOTHING happens.

This is just one example of why IMO you guys need to quickly start paying attention to your userbase because I have talked to many DEVs now that are pulling their scripts and moving them exclusively over to greasy due to issues and then not getting replies literally for months now from Justin or whomever is running things there now.

Natalie I have to speak up because I've been watching this thread and as a single dad of 2 babies (and approaching my 30yr mark in this industry myself) I've been committing significant DEV time lately to this site/product for multiple authors - for free no less that started as a hobby but that frankly supports your business a lot more than it does me.

Don't you think that it is a bit ludicrous to say that even if everyone wants to read your site in a dark style, we should fix that problem ourselves? That's like McDonald's back in the day saying "yep, everyone wants a big burger like this "Big Mac thing" we "could" offer, but we're not going to offer it, instead we're just going to let them go home and make it themselves".....They would have been out of business 60+ yrs ago and Burger King would have stepped up and sold it instead to the frustrated under-valued customers.

If nobody enjoys reading your site, the DEVs will not bother posting any scripts here and.....as DEVs if we do not post any scripts here then nobody will want to read the site. If you agree with that logical statement have you realized what is missing from that equation? Stylish. Site owners/management. From what I can tell, all the rest including the Stylish extension that is a close "lite" cousin to Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey (similar products that have been around forever) rely on that simple equation of the developers nice enough to provide this site their hard work for free, and those ingesting that hard work, all in the end supporting your business model.

Hopefully new management can begin really listening to those fueling and ingesting your business to continue growing this site/product over your competition.

Just for the record, the forum is not 'broken', clicking 'My discussions' link (or number) takes me to ... my discussions. Check your styles and scripts to see what's going on in your browser.

There's some problem with 'my discussions' section, for me it lists just a few of them on the first page but it offers me links to more empty discussion list pages.
To access the whole list of discussions I have to clic the profle name or avatar image on the top left, it opens a partial list with a 'More discussions' link on bottom to annex more discussions at the end of the page, that is working effectively.

Surely styles that just repaint youtube/twitter/facebook in dark (95% of stylish content :-t ), do no not require description - screenshot is enough. In other cases, depiction is desired

That was a humble opinion of 5% of users
  • I like the new design.
about "grid or list", I like both but it's a good idea let the users choose what they want.

First of all, very nice to meet another big contributor to the Stylish community. I assure you that work such as you put in, and other developers in this community, is greatly appreciated. This is exactly the reason we've opened a beta group composed with these developers and they've given us feedback on the new design before we started developing it.

We really appreciate your feedback and we’ll take it under consideration in future iterations.

Thanks again for being a valuable part of the Stylish community.

Got it. We'll work on finding a solution in our future iterations, that answers both cases.
  • I cant await to get a peak on the design. Currently i am viewing this topic on my smartphone and do not get the screenshots from the first post. But hopefully things are getting better with the re-design. I am realy thankfull that you guys are getting fresh air into the forum and the main page.
  • Well shit... I was just finishing up a complete redesign of the current us.o layout.
  • When will the first launch of the new design?
