Scrollbar Menu (style 52) attaching image of menu obscures
toolbars. Are others seeing this problem, is there a solution. [Reported 2008-12-30]

Now WORKING as of Firefox 3.0.9 and Firefox 3.0.10, and am once again
using styles 52 Menus and 54 Context (style 56 Bookmarks not needed if using 52) [Edited 2009-05-21]

Problem with a sticky separate image of a menu locking in on
the image does not have scroll bars and can only be turned off
by turning off Style 52. In the latest development, could
bring back or hide same partial image of a file menu, simply by
turning Style 52 on or off. Image went away with style 52
off, clicked on another menu and then on style 52 and image
did not return (for then), but later on image reappears as
soon as style 52 is activated. Don't know how to force the problem
but it is very frequent on Firefox 3.0.5 and hardly happened
before though I have had Minefield for over a year (recently
downgraded to Shiretoko).

First picture shows what would have been shown had I selected the File
menu but without the scrollbar. I had been using 700px but
restored original value of 300px and no change.

FF menu mess

  • I can force the problem to occur by using the "Inspect GUI XUL" Button of
InspectorWidget :: Firefox Add-ons by Patrick Thompson (Sailfish)
and examining a button (Bookmarks menu), problem is then seen next time a menu button is used
that would have vertical scrollbars like the Bookmarks menu button.

To be able to work again disable style 52.

To use style 52 again, first...
End all of the inspection windows, and exit and restart Firefox, can again reinvoke "Scrollbar Menu" (Style 52).

So I'm pretty sure that would have occurred on such times as I had the problem previously.
  • Some items to help keep things working for style 52, style 54, and style 56
    * Use the [!important] button to add !important to code

If problem occurs try one or more of the following
    * Use of Customize (View, Toolbars, Customize -or- right-click on toolsbars)
may repaint the window. Min/Max/Move window have no effect.
    * Turning off the style, and turning it back on again
    * Turn off style, Restarting Firefox, turning style on
Use of the "QuickRestart" extension helps with this
  • Workarounds:
With "!important" added to the coding of the Scrollbars styles (52, 54, 56) *and*
with "InspectorWidget" extension disabled [ ]
appear to have no more problems with these styles. But if problems do crop up again see previous comment.

    Documentation notes:
    * Style 52 Scrollbars Menu, does all menu vertical scrollbars,
except if using Firefox version 3 it does not do Context menus.
    * Style 54 Context menu only,
in Firefox version 3 Style 52 does not include Context menus
    * Style 56 Bookmarks Menu and Bookmarks Toolbar,
in Firefox version 3, it does only Bookmarks Toolbar and not Bookmarks Menu

I am using Firefox 3.0.5 on Windows Vista Basic Home (32 bit)
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv: Gecko/2008120122 Firefox/3.0.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
  • Although adding !important to the styles helped a bit, it was not sufficient, to prevent problems. The overlaying image is happening quite frequently even after disabling an extension ("Inspect GUI XUL") that I had thought might be poorly interacting. I have to turn off the scrollbars styles for now unless someone comes up with something.
  • All the same as above here ... :-(
Pretty sad, really. It used to be one of my favorite styles. Wonder if LouCypher will ever come around to see if it's fixable ... Or maybe someone can take a look at it?

(yes, i know the thread is getting old).
  • I turned the style (52) back on with Fx 3.5 and so far so good. I have the InspectorWidget enabled now too. Just thought i'd let you know.
  • Although I marked the first entry on 2009-05-21 as having been fixed when Firefox updated to 3.0.9 with no changes to the styles, I should have marked these styles as working at the bottom as well, as many will skip to the bottom of the discussion just to see if something is fixed. Current Firefox is 3.6 and the styles have been working fine ever since 3.0.9.
